The problem with what the GOP is trying to do – ensure the winner of the most primary/caucus votes does not get the nomination – is this:
By doing so, and in the way they are doing it (e.g putting their thumb – heck their whole hand and their arm, too – on the scale with their constant interference in the media, and the utterly-lacking-in-integrity mess in CO), they are saying THEY know best.
By NOT putting their thumb on the scale in 1996, 2008, 2012, when they were perfectly able to do so then, as well, they were silently nodding that the (dumb, ignorant) voters agreed with the party elders as to who was “best.” Because those (dumb, ignorant) voters agreed with the party, no need was created to overturn the will of those (dumb, ignorant) voters. Like the old saw about 100 monkeys in a room with 100 typewriters sooner or later cranking out Shakespeare, those (dumb, ignorant) voters had “gotten it right.”
The elders STILL knew best – and we (dumb, ignorant) voters were lucky enough to agree with them. Or, logically, they’d have pulled the same stunt in 1996, 2008, 2012.
You may remember how 1996, 2008 and 2012, with the selection of the party elders as the nominee, turned out.
And you may also remember how it turned out last time the elders disagreed with the primary voters but lacked the balls to overturn the will of those (dumb, ignorant) voters. That was in 1980.
What makes anyone think the same party elders who allowed – encouraged – the nomination of Dole, McCain and Romney… suddenly know best?
More to the point, millions of voters denied the choice of the candidate receiving the plurality – by millions of votes – and who has brought in millions of new voters and expanded the party (which was supposed to be a goal of the GOP elders), will not show up in November, guaranteeing a loss to Hillary.
That these same elders don’t mind this loss only shows how little, if any, difference actually exists between the parties. If there is ANY difference, in fact, between Hillary and Kasich and Ryan on illegal immigration or big government, those differences have not made the news…
The GOP will do what the GOP elders want to do. But millions of us will not stick around for it.
If the Libertarian Party were smart enough to recognize that, until & unless the welfare state is dismantled, their goal of open borders will never be realized, this would be the time for them to rise and displace the GOP as the GOP displaced the Whigs.
