My son (college) asked how on earth did America get to the place of the Patriot Act, its infringements on our liberty being blithely accepted & defended, and becoming a people willing to accept as president a man who will kill anyone he wants, any time he wants, anywhere he wants, and have half the nation cheering when he says he’ll ignore the Constitution to do whatever he wants, something the Founders fought a war to end, and America always has stood – and fought – against. Until now.
My reply to him:
We got here for the simple reason that we have been the only superpower for so long that generally stasis has been the case since 1945 – more than three generations – so that no one even can grasp how dangerous a place the world is, and because half the country does not – refuses to – recognize that those outside of Western Civilization do not share the core beliefs of Western Civilization – and will kill you for your beliefs, a pre-modern behavior.
This is why as one example, that people can grow up, receive what America regards as as excellent education (too many confuse a degree with an education; not at all the same thing), and have this kind of pure ignorance as the basis of their ideology, when in fact this is the case in war.
The West also is fundamentally post-religious, Europe more so than America, and Blue States more so than Red. Since our elites find the idea of God a pre-modern ignorant idea, they refuse to see that others don’t. (Remember this quote? Exactly the same fooundation.) Those of this worldview (Progressives) can ridicule the baptist redneck all they want. They can think that this isn’t offensive & they need fear no retribution, but even that baptist is Western & won’t cut off your head if you say “Dude, heard of the Enlightenment?” A Muslim will do exactly that – and nearly all our elites, and over half of our voters don’t and/or refuse to recognize & accept this.
This also is the core of “multiculturalism;” a psychological projection of a Western worldview onto non-Western cultures. They really do think all cultures believe in Western human rights, which is why they ignorantly say & believe these rights – and respecting them – are “universal.”
This is of course absurd. Even stating that they are common shows that it is not a general belief. (Do I need to tell you water is wet? No.) The only reason someone needs to tell you all cultures are the same… is because they aren’t.
If you haven’t yet read The Time Machine by HG Wells, you really should. (If you’re pressed for time, there’s a movie.) The characters we meet in the near-final section of the book, the Eloi, are the archetype of today’s Progressives, who are every bit in a state of ennui.
It’s sci/fi/fantasy, but the kind that needs to be read & understood by educated people, as is the case with 1984 and Animal Farm.
It’s also why I believe only secession (and here) can return liberty; too many tens of millions of adults have a core belief that is completely wrong and totally ignorant, and no amount of education or facts will change that.
I am so impressed with the education your are getting. That it prompts the intellectual curiosity it has is what great education is all about: it teaches you enough to know what you don’t know – and excites you to go find answers, a lifelong quest for knowledge.
WHY are we where we are? Because so many people don’t receive that kind of education.
