Joining the infantry – Army or Marines – is seen by many as the ultimate in patriotism. It’s time to re-think this.
Arguably since Korea, but certainly since Vietnam, America’s politicians have seen fit to send our best & brightest off to kill and to die in wars those politicians refuse to win.
Supporting this idiocy by joining as cannon fodder – which is all soldiers & Marines are in wars their commanders refuse to win – is not patriotism.
Ike ended the Korean War through back-channel communicatioons that he would nuke N Korea unless they talked. Because Ike recently had commanded the largest military force ever assembled and utterly defeated his enemy, killing millions along the way, they talked. No other brushfire wars were started with Ike as the American president.
Ever since, American pols have sent our kids to die rather than use our technology to defeat our enemies.
This is absurdity.
America has invented all the technology of the modern world. Yet we sacrifice our own children rather than use our technology to save them, which is the highest calling of any civilization
War is political and deadly. Combat is military and deadly. They aren’t the same thing. War is the use of all – ALL – national means to defeat a political opponent; combat is engaging military units in battle.
War without combat: Hiroshima. Nagasaki. Victory with fewer lives lost on both sides.
Combat without war: Vietnam. Iraq. Afghanistan. How’s that working out?
Joining an army is a political act. Going into combat for a nation whose leaders ARE GOING TO WASTE YOUR LIFE is deadly foolish.
Asking our kids to kill other human beings for no reason – and if we aren’t trying to win no reason exists – is pathological. It kills our kids. It psychologically harms our kids, our nation and our future. And it accomplishes no goal.
If no one joined-up, there’d be no army to send. No American kids to send off to kill and die in combat of utter inconsequence.
Would America be in danger? No more than now with our soldiers & Marines 10,000 miles away. And if any serious attack were made on America, we’d make a strategic retaliation. No soldiers required.
This is why Ike’s Massive Retaliation policy worked. MR is why, according to an acquaintance who teaches at the Naval War College, Parisians don’t speak Russian today. It kept the peace until Johnny boy JFK went to Vietnam to play ‘mine’s bigger.’ Because he refused to drop a couple of small nukes on Hanoi to show seriousness of purpose, he killed 2,000,000 Vietnamese & 60,000 Americans.
Only 400,000 Japanese died at Hiroshima & Nagasaki, including all radiological casualties over the next ten years. Only 20% of the Vietnamese we – unseriously – killed. How many Americans died in Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Invading Japan?
Absurd. But we’re doing the same in Iraq & Afghanistan.
Tactical nukes are not the city-killers of Hollywood’s special effects departments. We have fuel air explosives with enormous explosive power, some as large as a small nuke; but they don’t make the POLITICAL statement of war: attack us and we will destroy you. As I’ve blogged before, well-placed tactical nukes can kill ONLY the enemy – and save lots of civilian – and American military – lives. In Vietnam, they would’ve saved millions of lives.
If kids stopped joining tihe military, we’d either quit wasting American lives in ridiculous wars we don’t want to win, or we’d reinstitute a draft – and start sending EVERYONE’S kids off to die for no reason… and quit wasting American lives in ridiculous wars we don’t want to win.
Stop the supply of soldiers & Marines and we may be able to stop the demand for constant, pointless wars.
Or quit electing idiots who think the response to every global issue we dislike… is to send our kids to die pointlessly.
