They’re coming sooner than most people think. What will they mean? What will be the unintended consequences? What about the societal impact? What about the role of government?
That last sounds odd; what does the government have to do with driverless cars?
Well, the sooner these things are the majority of – or only – cars on the road, the safer everyone is, the higher the rate of road utilization, the lower the congestion and the lower the national gas consumption. Driverless cars will reduce congestion by as much as 90%. This is due to the faster reaction time of computers v humans, and the consequent ability to have cars a yard from each other at highway speeds.
Who needs light rail if we have driverless cars?
With governments spending so much 21st Century tax receipts on 19th Century rail transit that no longer will be needed (and never has been wanted), will these same governments keep these ever-more-worthless expenditures going, if only to maximize their take from the unions building them in the form of enforced dues funneled to the Democrat Party? (Yes.) Or will they stop spending this money and return it to the taxpayers? (LMAO.)
Government is spending billions on transit; they figure it’s their job to decide how YOU get to work and play. What’s to prevent them saying, “Hey! I know! We’ll have the GOVERNMENT buy everyone a driverless car! Just like a cell phone, everyone needs one! (…and think of at how many votes we’ll get…)”
Think that’s nuts? Why? The real impacts of driverless cars only enure when a large majority – or all – cars on the road are driverless. What’s the average age of cars now on the road? 7 years? 5? 10? How long at current – Democrat-depressed – economic output until all cars are replaced with driverless? 10 years? 20? Can the case be made that removing all old cars from the highways has a measurable common benefit? Yes. If it can be forced under the General Welfare clause, bet that Democrats will try to have the government give everyone a driverless car.
And – who will build these cars? If it’s the UAW you can BET that the government will buy them to ensure max union jobs and dues – funneled straight to Democrats.
(Understand that if the government buys your car we will have a permanent Democrat-Progressive government as the hundreds of billions paid for these cars will support millions of union employees who will take those tax-payer-provided dollars and pay dues straight to the Democrat National Committee. If you think the economy is bad now, or if your city doesn’t (yet) look like Detroit, just wait…)
Who, then, will OWN these cars… you… or the government?
Driverless cars also will get better mileage, reducing gasoline consumption, as they are more modern, lighter and computers are more efficient at accelerating – fuel usage.
Think the gas tax receipts are too low now to maintain the road infrastructure because of increasing mileage? If gas consumption drops 25%, how will the government pay for the infrastructure? Raise the taxes, turn all roads into toll, or own the cars themselves, forcing those of us using them essentially, to rent our cars from the government? (If you like your car you can keep your car.)
What if you want to go somewhere the government doesn’t want you to go? If they OWN the car, you can bet they can insert a GPS lockout mechanism to preclude driving anywhere other than where THEY want you to go. For the public benefit, no doubt. You know all those tiny urban condos and townhomes close to work in which the (rich, mansioned, suburban) politicians tell us we need to live? Maybe these cars only will go to those addresses…. Transit only goes to certain places; at one level, what’s the difference?
What about the family Sunday drive? Oops! Want to go for a drive in the mountains this weekend? Go camping? There’s a GAS CRISIS! NON-CRITICAL PERSONS CANNOT DRIVE THIS WEEKEND!!
Think that won’t happen? Really?
Driverless cars will have far fewer accidents.
What is one of the higher-paying low-skill blue collar jobs? Auto body repair.
Guess who will be out of a job? Lots and lots and lots of Democrat voters: Hispanic, African American….
Bondo? If cars aren’t getting bent, companies manufacturing replacement parts and body putty… gone. More low-skill jobs: History.
What about Auto parts stores? If you don’t own your car, you can’t modify it. More jobs – gone. Low-skill jobs…
For whom do these voters vote? Democrat Big Government. So guess who will be putting their own voters out of a job – nothing new, of course….
Do we really want to go there?
