The constant defensiveness of the GOP does not go un-remarked in this blog (examples here and here). This defensiveness, this refusal to go on offense against a statist Democrat Party, is in large part why we continue to lose elections – and Liberty – to the Far Left in our Center-Right country.
Two examples, same source.
First example: AM870 in Los Angeles has a morning drive program with two conservatives and one liberal hosting. Ben Shapiro, one of the conservatives, is a bright UCLA – Harvard Law grad. Yet he constantly misses opportunities to go on offense against a run-of-the-mill, ideological lefty, Brian Whitman, your basic supercilious arrogant feelings-matter-over-facts Liberal.
This morning, 26 June 2014, was one example. Evidently the LAPD has begun using an algorithm (already in use by police agencies around the Western World) from an anthropology prof from UCLA to determine where, geographically, crime is occurring. (It should go without saying that neither UCLA nor your basic anthro prof are Far Right wingnuts.) The information returned by this Big-Data algorithm can allow law enforcement to put the cops where the crime is. And the crime, as in every society in every time of history, centers in economically-disadvantaged areas. In America these often are minority neighborhoods.
The Left, including the ideologue on this station, predictably, says this is “racist.”
How does Shapiro respond? By defending against the racism charge. By doing battle on a field chosen by his opponent.
Winners fight on battlefields of THEIR choosing. Yet the Right continues to fight on battlefields chosen by the Left… and, axiomatically, losing.
Does Shapiro say that, if data shows this is where crime occurs, then ignoring that data – as the Left wants to do by pretending data can be “racist” – just ensures MORE crime victims in a minority neighborhood? No.
Does he say, “So what you are saying, Brian, is that it is not racist to ensure higher levels of preventable crime in a minority community, I guess because the Left doesn’t care about crime victims if they are Black.” No.
Either of these comments would put the Left on the defensive about programs that harm minorities, would force the Left to fight on a battlefield chosen by the Right. But they are arguments not used.
Second example: Some weeks ago the Lefty made a dismissive, throw-away comment along the lines of (I don’t recall the exact quote): ‘I’m sure most agree that policies of the Left show that we care more about the disadvantaged.’ Again, Shapiro did not respond, leaving listeners with the feeling that he either agreed with this ignorant comment, or did not disagree strongly enough to contest it. He let the Left stay on offense and the GOP on defense.
Rather, he ought to have said, in the dismissive manner he often demonstrates when addressing ignorance:
“No, Brian, policies need to be judged on their outcomes. The policies of the Left have created across America a permanently-disadvantaged minority class, from education to jobs to crime. It is the policies of the Left that SOUND as though the Left cares, but, in reality, just perpetuate poverty, family breakup, and joblessness. ‘Caring,’ Brian, is not about what makes you FEEL good; it is about results. The policies of the Left have created the catastrophes of Detroit, San Bernardino, Stockton. The policies of the Right – Reaganomics, for example – created a 20-yr, 17M job economic boom. This boom was far better for minorities than the policies you and your party constantly demand. So, no, Brian, no one who actually has THOUGHT about social problems in America, and has reviewed the result of Leftist policies, actually can support the idea that the Left, in fact, ‘cares.’ In fact, Brian, as anyone can see by looking at the RESULTS of the policies of the Left, the Left does NOT care about minorities – just as in this case in which the Left is perfectly happy that crime remains high in minority neighborhoods BECAUSE they are minority neighborhoods. The Left cares about SOUNDING as though they care about minorities, as that is what gets them votes while leaving minorities in poverty and as dependent as children on Big Government.”
This missing of opportunities to put the Left on defense and the Right on offense, this constant defensive attitude, is why the GOP is called, correctly, “The Stupid Party.”
The Right CANNOT win on defense. The Left WILL win if not forced onto the defensive.
Zero facts are on the side of the Left. But zero appreciation of the use of majority party status will not force the minority party onto the defensive where they belong.
If the GOP really wants to take this country back to liberty and freedom, and to effectively address the problems of the economically disadvantaged required to get us there, the Right needs to go on the offense – where the facts show they belong.
