Watch this video and ask yourself a couple of questions:
Do they have video of the Trayvon Martin attack? Is it admissible? How would you confirm provenance of that video?
How would you ensure surveillance video had not been manipulated with the extremely capable post-production tools available to anyone with a PC or iPad – like the government?
But HERE’s the MOST important question: Do you TRUST the government with this information/video?
There is NOTHING more fundamental in the DNA of an American than distrust of government. Our entire Constitution is built on that distrust – it’s why we allow the government ONLY specific, enumerated powers. It’s why we have checks and balances, and three branches of government.
It’s why – legally, Constitutionally – the govt ONLY gets to do what WE THE PEOPLE ALLOW IT TO DO – and NOTHING more.
This surveillance capability cannot be put back in the bottle… but the 4th Amendment PROHIBITS using it on Americans without probable cause; it’s called “Due Process,” and it is REQUIRED before you can be spied on. And, no, a FISA Court saying, ‘go ahead and spy all you want,’ is NOT “Probable Cause,” no matter WHAT powers the creators of that “court” give THEMSELVES. Can you say “Fox guarding hen house”?
Not that recent presidents have followed those rules… or the Constitution.
It’s why so many on both sides now are so angry at Obama for IRS, AP, James Rosen, Benghazi, etc.
It’s why many of us on the Right are not ready to call Snowden an “enemy,” and are re-evaluating our positions on Assange.
I’m a national security guy – but I also am a Constitutionalist.
The GOP is running around – like Rep Peter King (R-NY) this morning on Fox – yammering about the sky falling if we don’t surveille ALL Americans ALL the time. This is NOT Constitutional. The Constitution does NOT allow violations of the Bill of Rights for fishing expeditions. Domestic surveillance without Due Process or Probable Cause is a fishing expedition – and one that sets an extremely dangerous precedent.
Think of it this way: Our system of justice is designed with the philosophy that we’d rather let 100 guilty men go free than imprison one innocent man. Why is this not the same?
If we have the odd terror attack – and yes, I admit this seems cold – and 10-100 people are killed – put that into perspective. Do we REALLY want 300M people surveilled 24×7 in the event that we MAY be able to stop an attack on 1? 10? 100? Really? Are your liberties so precious that you will give them away to the State for that? Really? Will you put 100 innocent men in jail because ONE of them MIGHT be guilty?
Remember when the American government, when attacked by an enemy, declared war on the ENEMY… and NOT on AMERICAN CITIZENS?
We KNOW where this terror ideology is centered and funded. Did we win WW2 by looking for spies or saboteurs here – or by annihilating the centers of ideology and funding of our enemies?
You – the American public – now are sending thousands of men overseas to fight, kill and die (but not to win) for “our freedoms.” Is THIS what they are protecting: a Surveillance State? A State that ignores its own laws?
This government already is doing everything it can to destroy the 2nd Amendment.
This government is ignoring the 4th Amendment with PATRIOT and FISA “courts”.
This government, having given itself the ability to imprison someone, literally forever, without an indictment or trial, has already destroyed the 5th & 6th Amendments.
The 9th and 10th Amendments have been ignored by American governments for DECADES.
This government has told the US Military that they cannot read what this government does not want them to read. What good is freedom of the press if a citizen – especially a citizen-soldier – is not allowed to read that free press? Is THIS what our forefathers fought and died for? And to their everlasting shame the military leadership has accepted and promulgated that order rather than refusing it at the cost of their careers – and saving America, which is – or was – more than a geography.
If you haven’t yet grasped that we no longer live under the Constitutional Rule of Law, but under the unconstitutional Rule of Man, then you simply are not paying attention.
When does it stop? When is enough .. ENOUGH?
“Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”
– Judy Collins
They are paving our Constitution and putting up a Police State…
OUR government is that: OUR GOVERNMENT. It does NOT belong to what has become the “Ruling Class.”
If they continue to refuse to abide by OUR rules as defined in the Constitution – THEY CAN BE REPLACED. AND WILL BE.
