Europe, whose policies the Left for unfathomable reasons worships, recently (no longer) was an open, bustling marketplace of ideas and commerce, of freedom and social safety nets, of tolerance and history. It is nearly impossible to think of any technology, philosophy, invention or idea in-use in the world today that did not come about from Europeans or European societies, like America. From Communism to Capitalism, from Individual Rights to Freedom of Speech to Fascism, from the bicycle to the train, the plane, the transistor, the microchip, the computer, the telephone and the internet, Europeans have created the modern industrial and post-industrial world of wealth, freedom, classical liberalism and trade. “Multiculturalists” may not like this, but it simply cannot be intelligently argued otherwise.
Europe today, however, is full of major sections of major cities to which even armed police will not go, of laws against free speech if they incite people of one particular religion to begin killing because they can’t take words critical of themselves or their religion, of a social safety net allowing people to retire on full pension at 55, but who create no new jobs – and no new children – to pay for these pensions, leaving both a greying and increasingly poor continent.
Democrats remember the Europe of yesterday, pretend it is the Europe of today, pretend America can be today the Europe of yesterday, and are doing everything they can to accomplish this goal.
What Democrats are missing in the historical context of the destruction of the West they are fostering through maleducation, historical illiteracy, “multiculturalsim,” etc., is this:
Europe exists only because of the economic and military might of America, and of our historical willingness to use that might to protect it.
No Marshall Plan – no European economies, wealth, privilege.
No NATO (the vast majority of whose funding and nearly 100% of combat troops and transport has been paid and deployed by the American taxpayers and servicemen and women) – no independent European countries and no social welfare (paid for by taxes mature countries use to defend themselves).
So, yes, Europe’s been a fun playground since the closing of its self-inflicted (and some would argue fatal) wounds of the two World Wars (or one World War with a 20-year hiatus to raise more European men to kill more Europeans). But that playground has been paid for by American taxes funding American combat troops and buying weapons and funding technology to allow Europeans to continue to play at grown-up.
The point is this: Europe has only been a fun playground because the only economy on the planet large enough to both afford to pay for their defense (both keeping Europe Free during the post-war years, and allowing those social programs) and charitable enough to do so, paid for its recovery, paid for its social safety net (by taking over its defense obligations), defended it, and kept its economies healthy enough to become major trading partners.
Only the existence of America, and its charitable willingness to spend blood and treasure – and to credibly threaten to spend ever-more whenever necessary – has kept Europe free.
Absent a strong, capitalistic, economically vibrant, charitable, Rule-of-Law America, Western Europe would look just like Eastern Europe at the close of the Cold War. By putting American economic and military might into decline – as Obama and the Democrats unquestionably are doing – all of Western Civilization is being put at-risk, along with the freedoms and liberties the Left once held dear and now only pretends to hold valuable.
As Mark Steyn points out this month in National Review:
Sometimes great powers decline slowly, almost imperceptibly, as Britain did for much of the 20th century. Sometimes it’s more sudden and convulsive. Obama is attempting Euro-statism, but, unlike Europe, without the counterweight of America to preserve some approximate relationship to reality. Which is to say I do not think this decline will be genteel, for America or the world.
