Obama the other day made an intelligent remark. Shocking not only because it was intelligent, but also because of the manner in which the Right Wing responded. It may well also have been the first time I agreed with him.
What was the remark? That America is not a Christian nation.
Of course it isn’t. The First Amendment states that rather clearly for those who, like Hannity, can’t seem to grasp this truism and historical fact.
Was America built on the Judeo-Christian heritage? Of course it was.
Could America have been created in any other religious tradition? Of course not.
Nonetheless our nation is specifically not defined by its religion.
Those who landed at Plymouth Rock left the Old World specifically NOT to be forced to be a part of a nation proclaimed under any specific religious tradition. Religious freedom is the bedrock of our nation and of our history.
Those who do not understand this do not understand America.
For America to be a “Christian nation,” we would not be welcoming of all faiths – and we are. We would not be home to the largest Jewish population in the world – and we are. People of other faiths would not feel welcomed and free to do and worship as they please – and they do and are.
We would not be as free as we are philosophically were our philosophy not rooted in freedom of thought, worship, tradition, and in the many and varied philosophies brought to our shores by worshipers of other religions.
We are a free nation – not defined by any religious tradition – or by Islam, not a religious tradition at all in the Western sense, which requires the separation of Church and State.
The reaction of the Right – Hannity, Rush, et al – to this statement of fact proves once again, as if it needed to be proved once again, the truth of the first half of Dr Searle’s comment: “the Right is too stupid to discuss, but the Left is evil.”
If you don’t yet grasp the truth of the second half of his statement you are not paying attention, but here’s a quick primer for you:
For those of you subsumed by the true civilizational idiocy of “multiculturalism” and thinking that Islam is a religion, remember that in the West, religion requires a separation between church and state. Islam recognizes no such separation. Indeed, the state is at the center of Islam – it is not in any way, shape or form a “religion” as understood in the West. Those who don’t understand that are destroying the freedoms they hold so dear – so stupid they don’t understand what they are doing, and so evil that they willingly and eagerly perpetrate the destruction of liberty for everyone.
