President Elect Obama has proposed Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary.
But Geithner didn’t pay Social Security or Medicare taxes for several years, despite constant reminders from his employers, the IMF.
Now, you or I would go to jail for this.
But not Geithner. He’s “contrite” and made an “honest mistake.”
Help me out here. He is a financial professional about to take over Treasury, and it’s an “honest mistake” when he fails to pay his taxes?
But it gets better.
Sen Hatch – a REPUBLICAN, once the party of law and order – says he’ll “still support him… he’s a competent guy.”
I don’t know about you, but when I think of a “competent” adult, I consider his ability and willingness to live up to his responsibilities – and that includes paying his taxes.
Sen. Grassley, senior REPUBLICAN on the Senate Finance Committee considering his nomination, says, “It’s serious, and whether or not it’s disqualifying is to be determined.”
“[W]hether or not it’s disqualifying?” What is going on here? The guy broke the law. He didn’t set about paying his taxes until he was caught. The spin is that he paid them as soon as he found out about it. Sorry – a guy in his position with his experience knows when he’s paid his taxes. And is responsible both for knowing and for doing.
I really don’t care what his accountant told him or when, just like the IRS wouldn’t care what my accountant told me or when if I didn’t pay my taxes for several years.
It’s to be expected that Democrats break the law – they do so all the time, from elections to registration to anything you can think of.
But REPUBLICANS? Sorry – I expect a hell of a lot more from adults than from Democrats.
If the GOP wants to regain any semblance of respect from the voters, perhaps they ought to consider obeying the law and holding others accountable to do the same.
I’ve already called the RNC in Washington and asked if they even understand that giving money and election assistance to guys who don’t seem to understand the law is exactly how NOT to EVER AGAIN WIN AN ELECTION.
Will the RNC care what I say? Nope. They’ll continue to give money to Hatch and Grassley to be re-elected and to continue to flout the law.
What is going on in this country?
If these guys get to break the law whenever they want without ramifications, why can’t the rest of us?
How, exactly, does this make our country better?
How do we teach our children to be honest, obey the law, do the right thing, when we have senior elected officials blowing off their responsibility – to obey the law and NOT to confirm lawbreakers to Cabinet positions?
How can ANYONE trust this Baby-Boomer government which absolutely refuses – across all party lines – to do the RIGHT THING?
Do ANY Baby Boomers at ANY level have ANY integrity?
