The only people not recognizing the fact of the disaster our education system has become (not opinion, fact) are the Teachers unions, those they support with campaign contributions, and the media supporting the recipients of those contributions.
If that leaves you wondering who is the enemy of our children’s future, it is the Democrat Party.
Republicans have their own sets of idiocies, but the future of education in this country is a disaster given the current Democrat Party.
This should surprise no one.
An unreported fact of Democrats is that they don’t have children. Scoff all you want – and then go look at the demographics of the Blue states. Absent illegal immigration every single Blue State is in net population decline. Good luck finding children in San Francisco.
Look at Western Europe – that failed demi-continent. Every single country is in net population decline. Why?
Liberals don’t have children.
Can you think of anything dumber than trusting that segment of the population with no children to make policy for children?
When a Democrat demands the passage of legislation, “For the children,” you are guaranteed that is precisely not what that legislation is for.
“No Child Left Behind” legislation, news magazine cover articles on “What We Have Learned”, studies by various interest groups will not change this fact.
Businesses clamoring for an increase in H1B visas rather than demanding local Boards of Education, State Education bureaucracies, and the Federal Government fix education – or they will move to another locale where the population does care about education – will not change this fact.
Pushing increased visas for educated foreigners is the best way to ensure education is not fixed here in America.
If business needs more educated workers – and they do – business must force American education to get better.
No amount of money thrown at our current education structure will fix the endemic problems. No amount of legislation foisted on us by either party will fix the disasters that are our public (and many private) schools.
Democrats have controlled every major American school district for over 50 years; all are worse than they were 50 years ago.
Think of the changes the world has seen in 50 years. MRIs to robotic surgery to spaceflight to the liberation of women (in the West, at any rate) to Civil Rights (in the West) to the end of the Cold War. From no computers to an amount of power and capability undreamed of only decades ago – sitting on your wrist or on your hip in your cell phone.
But education? The force that drives the future? Worse that it was a half-century ago. How does the future look now?
How were all these cool things invented? By people educated before unions took over American education. Has anything of note been invented since?
Microchips, the Internet, data communications, space flight – all invented by Americans educated before Teachers unions grabbed power.
Doesn’t that bother you?
In my kids’ school district, a once-upon-a-time state-recognized District still playing on that 20-year old recognition, teachers get a half-day off monthly for their “education.” And things get worse, not better. They get a day off every-other-month in absurdly-named “pupil-free days”. And things get worse, not better. Gifted children watch Hollywood movies at all grade levels in normal curriculum, as though a commercial, dramatic movie can teach anything, let alone anything important. It is just a substitute for the hard work of developing an engaging lesson plan, pure and simple.
Teaching is hard work. Smart, hard workers are needed to accomplish it.
Over twenty years ago the Dean of the Boston College School of Education penned an Op-Ed for the Wall Street Journal in which he noted that the Schools of Education were filled with the dregs of the student population, were the laughingstock of the academic departments – students and professors, were populated by those with the lowest SATs, the least motivation, and that the level and amount of research they produced argued for fewer than half of the then-current number of these ridiculous “Schools.”
Nothing has changed.
How did this come to pass? Fixated on taxes, the GOP refused to notice that the Women’s Liberation movement gave smart, motivated women opportunities far more exciting and higher-paying than teaching. Conservatives, of all people, refused to understand the market and so refused to pay teachers what they were worth.
The best exited the profession, the dimmest entered, and the disaster is evident.
You could triple my property taxes to pay teachers what they are worth.
But not these teachers.
Teachers insist on being labeled and treated as professionals. They should be. Professionals are hired, trained, paid and fired on merit alone. Didn’t make your goal this quarter? See ya. Can’t pass the annual certification test? See ya. No one wants your services? See ya.
This is the way Professionals act and are treated. This is the way Teachers must act and be treated. No one wants to be in your class, or no parent wants their kid in your class? See ya.
There is no alternative to this, regardless of how much time and money or how many lives are thrown away by keeping these unions in-place.
Teacher Unions hurt our children, they are killing our future, and they waste minds – irreplaceable minds.
Dr. Carolyn M. Hoxby has done excellent, detailed work in this area and her results cannot be shrugged off with sound bites or campaign contributions: The rate of union uptake and the amount of power given a teacher union is directly related to the lowering of education results and the increase in dropout rates.
Teachers Unions stand in the way of educating our children, as do Conservatives refusing to pay taxes to improve education by recognizing and treating teachers as professionals – and demanding they be hired, fired, promoted and paid as professionals.
Teachers Unions stand in the way of America’s future, blocking social, medical, scientific and cultural progress that could be made by educated Americans. (To say nothing of political choices – a guy with no resume really having a chance of becoming president? Would an educated electorate even imagine the possibility? Of course not.)
Teachers Unions must be outlawed. By Constitutional Amendment if necessary.
Or we are saying we just don’t care about our children and our future.
It really is that simple.
