Death, Disaster and Building Codes

Avoiding huge death tolls in natural disasters isn’t rocket science – really.

100,000 deaths from a cyclone. 10,000 deaths from an earthquake. Why are these developing-world casualty numbers not replicated when a natural disaster hits, say, Japan or America?

Building codes.

Why don’t developing countries have building codes? Simple – they lack the wealth necessary to require, implement and enforce them.

Everyone agonizes over unnecessary deaths. Most deaths in a natural disaster are unnecessary. All that’s needed is wealth.

Who yammers most about the need to “do something” to help victims of these calamities? Who clamors for more aid, for more medicine, for more relief, for more of everything that wouldn’t be needed if building codes existed? Organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam. Various NGOs that need natural disasters to sustain their funding.

Like it or not, the majority of those staffing and running these NGOs are dyed-in-the-wool Liberals. And they need deaths to sustain their incomes. Massive deaths, the kind you get through earthquakes or cyclones ravaging countries lacking building codes and infrastructure.

How do countries acquire wealth? Capitalism. Free trade. Indigenous industry.

Who fights most strongly against capitalism, free trade (particularly in agriculture for many developing countries) and indigenous industry (every time the West donates clothes to Africa, local textile and clothing industries die – tough to compete with “free”)?

Easy – Liberals. Ask Nancy Pelosi or Barbara Boxer or Harry Reid about free trade. Ask anyone at MoveOn.org about capitalism.

Evidently Liberals figure only the West deserves to be wealthy.

People – tens of thousands of people – are dying from natural disasters out there in the real world. The wealth generated by capitalism, free trade, the development of indigenous industries, and sane agricultural policies (distinctly unlike the 2008 American Farm Bill) could prevent many – over time nearly all – of those deaths.

And the folks bloviating about natural disasters killing these people are the same Liberals preventing the development of wealth that would lead to the building codes that would save them.

Should the wealthy and semi-capitalist West provide aid to victims of natural disasters? Of course.

Better to help these countries build wealth and avoid the casualties to begin with.

It ain’t rocket science; it’s just too complex for Liberals and Congresspeople.

No wealth = no building codes = death.

Capitalism + Free Trade = wealth = building codes = far fewer deaths.

Remember this next time Liberals yammer about aiding or saving victims of a cyclone or an earthquake.

If Liberals just believed people other than themselves also deserved wealth – and the safety that wealth generates, a lot fewer people would be dying out there.

About Alex Scipio

About Alex Scipio: Alex moved out of the People's Republic of California to the Free State of Arizona, finally tiring of the lack of the Bill of Rights, the overgrown idiocracy, and the catering to non-Americans & welfare recipients. He still wonders how America got from Truman, Eisenhower, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan to the Liberal and Conservative extremes so badly managing America today. And, yes, islam DOES need to be annihilated. And doing what he can to get folks away from the extremes of political life.
